How To Make Hanukkah Slime Recipe with Kids Winter Holiday

Let’s learn how to make Hanukkah slime recipe! This season I am adding a special slime to our holiday slime collection. I want to make sure that all my readers have a fun slime to make for the winter season, and I have noticed there isn’t a whole lot of fun Hanukkah science or STEM activities out there. We made one of our easy homemade slimes with a Hanukkah and Dreidel theme this year! Hope you enjoy.

WHY DID WE MAKE A HANUKKAH SLIME?

In all honesty, I will let you know that we don’t celebrate Hanukkah here. However, my son’s classroom has been enjoying several Hanukkah stories this week. I also know that Hanukkah is not an equivalent to Christmas!

As important as it is to celebrate and enjoy our own occasions, it’s also important to reach out and learn about what others are celebrating this time of year.

MY LATEST VIDEOS

My son is looking forward to learning how to play Dreidel this week. Unfortunately these dreidels are more for decoration than play! Though he’s still enjoying them.

We love making homemade slime, and we wanted to make a fun Hanukkah theme slime recipe for all our friends out there celebrating Hanukkah in the upcoming weeks. Enjoy the recipe and pictures below! Our Homemade Hanukkah Slime Recipe is yet another AMAZING slime recipe we can show you how to make.

HANNUKAH SLIME SCIENCE AND CHEMISTRY

We always like to include a bit of homemade slime science around here, and that’s perfect for exploring Chemistry with a fun Hanukkah theme. Slime is an excellent chemistry demonstration and kids love it too! Mixtures, substances, polymers, cross linking, states of matter, elasticity, and viscosity are just a few of the science concepts that can be explored with homemade slime!

What’s the science behind the slime? The borate ions in the slime activators  (sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid) mix with the PVA (polyvinyl-acetate) glue and forms this cool stretchy substance. This is called cross linking!

The glue is a polymer and is made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules with flow past one another keeping the glue in a liquid state. Until…

SLIME IS A NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID

When you add the borate ions to the mixture, it starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and thicker and rubberier like slime! Slime is a polymer.

Picture the difference between wet spaghetti and leftover spaghetti the next day. As the slime forms the tangled molecule strands are much like the clump of spaghetti!

Is slime a liquid or solid? We call it a Non-newtonian fluid because it’s a little bit of both! Experiment with making the slime more or less viscous with varying amounts of foam beads. Can you change the density?

HANUKKAH THEME SLIME TIPS

The base for this Hanukkah slime uses one of our most basic slime recipes which is clear glue, water, glitter glue, and liquid starch.

Now if you don’t want to use saline solution, you can absolutely test out one of our other basic recipes using saline solution or borax powder. We have tested all three recipes with equal success!

HANUKKAH SLIME RECIPE SUPPLIES

NOTE: We made two batches of slime for our Hanukkah slime recipe, blue glitter, and silver glitter. You can also add in gold glitter slime!

We have used this particular recipe before  with our basic gold and silver slime recipes. The special addition that is a little different from our basic recipes is using small containers of glitter glue {dollar store or craft store}. They are only about 1.5 ounces in size.

This fun Hanukkah activity calls for one-two batches of our easy liquid slime recipe. You can make more or less depending on your Hanukkah theme ideas!

The best slime recipe starts with the right slime ingredients. Make sure to follow along with our measurements. Start by adding your glues and water to a bowl and grab a mixing utensil. Mix it up and add food coloring, glitter, and confetti as desired!

BEST SLIME ACTIVATORS

Add in your slime activator (baking soda and saline solution) to complete the chemical reaction you read about above in the science behind the slime section. If you scrolled past it, go back and read it with your kids!

You can also learn more about all our favorite slime activators here. Keep in mind that liquid starch, saline solution, and borax powder are all in the boron family. Neither of these ingredients are truly borax free.

You can see the slime start form almost immediately when you pour in the liquid starch.

It won’t take long for the slime to come together. You can only mix so long with a spoon before it’s time to dig in with your hands.

KNEADING SLIME IS KEY

We always recommend kneading your slime well after mixing. Kneading the slime really helps to improve it’s consistency. The trick with saline solution slime is to squirt a few drops of solution onto your hands before picking up the slime.

You can knead the slime in the bowl before you pick it up as well. This slime is stretchy but can be stickier. However, keep in mind that although adding more saline solution reduces the stickiness, and it will eventually create a stiffer slime.

HANUKKAH SLIME STEP BY STEP

NOTE: I used tiny bottle of glitter glue as mentioned above. However, you can add food coloring and extra glitter with just the clear glue to achieve the full effect!

  1. Squeeze the content of your mini glitter glue bottle into a 1/2 cup measure. Fill the remaining space with clear glue. Note: If not using the smaller glitter glue bottle, just use a full 1/2 cup of clear glue.
  2. Empty the glue into the bowl and mix with 1/2 cup of water.
  3. Add glitter and sequins. Add a good amount but don’t go overly crazy with the sequins. If you find your slime is a bit less stretchy the amount of sequins can interrupt the process. Mix well.
  4. Add 1/2 cup of liquid starch to the bowl and mix. You will notice the slime begins to form right away!
  5. Mix briskly for 30 seconds or so, and you are ready to remove your slime.
  6. Knead your slime and have fun!

If your slime still feels too sticky, you may need a few more drops of starch or knead your slime longer. You can always add but you can’t take away.

NOTE: We have found that the Elmers specialty glues tend to be a bit stickier than their regular glue, and we prefer our 2 ingredient slime recipe for this glue.

STORING YOUR HANUKKAH SLIME

Slime lasts quite awhile! I get a lot of questions regarding how I store my slime. We use reusable containers in either plastic or glass. Make sure to keep your slime clean and it will last for several weeks. I love the deli style containers in my recommended slime supplies list here.

If you want to send kids home with a bit of slime from a camp, party, or classroom project, I would suggest packages of reusable containers from the dollar store or grocery store or even Amazon. For large groups we have used condiment containers as seen here.
